The statistics are staggering: one in three women worldwide has been a victim of domestic violence?physical, sexual or emotional abuse?at least once in her life. In the United States, a woman is battered every nine seconds, and more than three women are murdered each day by their husbands or boyfriends.
To empower women and help provide women everywhere with the right to live peacefully in their own homes without violence or abuse, the Avon Foundation for Women launched its Speak Out Against Domestic Violence initiative in the U.S. in 2004. Since that time, the Avon Foundation has made great progress in its efforts to raise awareness of domestic violence and to support the victims. To date, the Avon Foundation and Avon global philanthropy have donated nearly $40 million across the globe to end violence against women.
Over the past five years, the Avon Foundation has taken part in a series of International Women's Day activities to help call attention to women's issues worldwide. From cohosting the Global Summit for a Better Tomorrow at the United Nations in 2007 and 2008, and launching the Avon Global Center for Women and Justice at Cornell Law School in 2009, to initiating the Global Partnership to End Violence Against Women in 2010, the Avon Foundation has renewed its commitment to ending domestic violence every year.
The special Avon Empowerment products that Avon Representatives sell are a critical source of fund-raising for the Speak Out Against Domestic Violence initiative. The first of these products were launched in 2008, and new ones have been introduced each year to raise crucial funds for programs to reduce domestic and gender violence around the globe. The products feature the infinity symbol, which represents lives with unlimited potential when free from violence.
For this year's International Women's Day, the Avon Foundation and its Honorary Chair, Reese Witherspoon, will join more than 1,500 activists and advocates from more than 90 countries who work in shelters or programs dedicated to assisting domestic violence victims and families at the 2nd World Conference of Women's Shelters, held February 27?March 1. At the conference, the Avon Foundation will recognize best practices in communications from around the world that focus on ending violence against women, and Reese Witherspoon will present a special communications award to four organizations. Reese will also introduce the 2012 Empowerment product: the elegant Circle of Support Necklace.
This gorgeous silvertone necklace features a series of interlocking infinity symbols, and is priced at $5. Avon will donate 100 percent of net profits ($3.71 for each necklace sold) to the Speak Out Against Domestic Violence program.
"Each year, in recognition of International Women's Day, the Avon Foundation offers a new Empowerment product that provides a tangible way women and men can help end the devastating impact of violence against women," says Carol Kurzig, president of the Avon Foundation for Women. "To every Avon Representative who sells this Circle of Support Necklace?and our other breast cancer and domestic violence products?we offer you our heartfelt thanks for your dedication and commitment. We could not accomplish our goals without your support. You are the reason we are saving lives."
